The U.S. Congress is moving toward redesigning Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. Introduced on March 11 and currently under review by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, this resolution reflects the commitment that the U.S. Congress has to addressing the pressing issue of religious violence in Nigeria. For more than a decade, Nigeria has experienced an alarming rise in violence by extremist groups such as Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and Fulani militants. More than 5,000 believers were killed in 2023 alone, surpassing any other nation, and since 2009 more than 18,000 churches have damaged or destroyed. In 2020, Nigeria was designated a CPD but the Biden administration undid this in 2021. In just the past month, Fulani militants have killed close to 150 Christians in Plateau and Benue states.
Please pray…
Pray that the U.S. Congress will pass the bill designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and that this will lead to the Nigerian government to begin protecting its Christian citizens and arresting and prosecuting Islamic terrorists.
Pray that the President of Nigeria and the governors of the Muslim states will be replaced by leaders who respect the rights of Christians to live in peace and worship as they please.
Pray that the Lord will give comfort, peace and hope to Nigeria's grieving and fearful Christians.
